Frequently asked questions

What is Power BI Copilot in one sentence?

Power BI Copilot is Microsoft's generative AI feature inside Power BI that helps users author report pages from natural-language prompts, generate DAX measures, summarize visuals into narrative text, and ask natural-language questions of certified semantic models.

Is Power BI Copilot the same as Microsoft 365 Copilot?

No. Microsoft 365 Copilot is the assistant inside Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams. Power BI Copilot is specifically inside Power BI. Both are part of the broader Microsoft Copilot family. Power BI Copilot is typically licensed via Fabric capacity (F64 or higher) rather than the M365 Copilot subscription.

What does Power BI Copilot actually do?

Five things in 2026: create a report from a natural-language prompt against a semantic model, generate DAX for a measure based on a description, summarize a visual or page into narrative text, answer a question against the data with a generated visual, and help author the semantic model itself (table descriptions, measure documentation).

How is Power BI Copilot licensed?

Power BI Copilot requires Fabric capacity F64 or higher (~$8,400 per month reserved). Smaller capacities do not have Copilot available. Per-user PPU (Power BI Premium Per User) and Pro licenses do not include Copilot. The capacity-based requirement is the main licensing surprise for most teams.

How does Power BI Copilot compare to Tableau Pulse?

Power BI Copilot is a report-authoring and Q&A assistant inside Power BI Desktop and Service. Tableau Pulse is a metrics-monitoring and personalized insights product that lives alongside Tableau Cloud. They are different products with different jobs. See [Tableau Pulse vs Power BI Copilot](/insights/tableau-pulse-vs-power-bi-copilot-2026).

Does Power BI Copilot work without Fabric?

Limited capabilities. The full Copilot surface requires Fabric capacity. Some Copilot features have been backported to Power BI Premium per Capacity (P-skus), but with P-skus being deprecated through 2026 the migration to F-skus is the practical path.

Is Power BI Copilot accurate?

Accuracy depends entirely on the quality of the semantic model. Copilot grounded against a well-defined model with clear measure descriptions and table relationships produces good results. Copilot against a sparse, undocumented, denormalized model hallucinates frequently. The semantic model is the leverage point.

How does Thinklytics work on Power BI Copilot?

We scope Copilot rollouts adjacent to semantic model design and certified metric work. The Copilot value follows the model quality. See [Power BI Copilot consulting](/insights/power-bi-copilot-consulting-2026) for the engagement scope and [Power BI semantic model design that scales](/insights/power-bi-semantic-model-design-that-scales-2026) for the prerequisite.
