4GB Access database replaced with real-time Snowflake in one quarter

Challenge

The casino’s floor analytics team relied on a 4GB Microsoft Access database updated just once a day to decide slot placement and denominations. This delay meant floor managers worked with data that was 12 to 36 hours old. As a result, they moved high-performing machines off the floor prematurely and kept underperforming ones too long. The outdated data blocked timely, effective decisions.

Approach

We moved the floor analytics from Access to Snowflake to handle larger data volumes and improve speed. We set up real-time data feeds from the slot management system, updating hourly during normal peak hours and every 15 minutes during heavy traffic. Then, we created a Tableau dashboard to display live machine performance, denomination breakdowns, and actionable floor management insights.

Outcome

We cut data lag from up to 36 hours down to under an hour, enabling floor managers to make slot placement decisions within the same day. This real-time approach added $1.4 million in slot revenue over six months. We also automated compliance reporting, saving 2.6 full-time employees’ worth of work each year.

How real-time data completely changed the way we make decisions
